90 Plus Cellars
Lets be honest, higher quality wine tends to come with a hefty price tag. But is it possible to get that same quality of wine for less? Sounds like another marketing ploy, right? You, like I, may be a bit skeptical that this is even possible so I put one such company to test. 90 Plus Cellars claims to have high quality wines but at a better price point. But how? To be honest, the whole concept is pretty genius! Read on to see how exactly 90 Plus Cellars does it.
How Is This Possible?!
Alright, listen to this genius move. In 2009, Founder Kevin Maher started out by calling wineries who produced high quality wines asking if they had any extra wine for sale. Many told him to shove off but a handful agreed to sell it to him. He, then, put their wine in his bottles with his labels. But why would wineries agree to this? Why wouldn’t they just sell it themselves at their usual high prices? The answer is actually rather simple. Most of you may remember what 2009 was like. The economy was in the hole and wine sales had plummeted. However, producers of high quality (aka expensive) wines were unwilling to mark down the prices of their wines in fear that it would harm their brand. Therefore, some were willing to sell their excess grapes at a lower price to 90 Plus cellars. Voila! There you have the perfect equation for high quality wines at a lower price.
Is The Wine Really That Good?
Ok, so now you ask is the wine really that good? Worth a rating of 90 Plus points? I tried out 5 of their wines and was truly shocked at the quality given their price. Here are some of my favorites.
I am hard to impress with a Pinot Noir. It needs to be truly exceptional for me to even consider repurchasing it so it says something when I say I LOVED this Russian River Valley 90 PlusCellars Pinot. Bursting with flavors this wine was delicious on its own and drank beautifully with dinner.
Who doesn’t love a good Pinot Grigio when it’s 100 degrees out? We paired this with some fresh fruit and drank it ICE cold and could not have been happier. A bonus…it was from Italy. Always fun to drink great quality wines from regions other than those you are accustomed to.
Last but not least is this 90 Plus Cellars Cab Sauv from CA. I figured this one would be my favorite as I am partial to CA Cabs and I wasn’t wrong. This wine was the perfect showcase of what a California Cabernet should be. Big, bold, and bursting with flavors this wine was absolutely of higher quality but at a better price! Give it a try!
