Let me introduce you to my two best friends, wine and chocolate! And when the two are combined? HEAVEN. Last week I did a wine and chocolate pairing that was to die for so I had to share with you all. Other than the sheer deliciousness that is chocolate there are reasons that so many pair wine and chocolate. Chocolate, like wine, actually has a rather complex flavor profile and those flavors can be further enhanced by pairing them with wine. The same is true for the wine.
Our Wine and Chocolate Tasting
Our tasting was a bit unconventional as we used some funky flavored chocolates from Chuao Chocolatier that my husband and I are currently OBSESSED with. These gourmet chocolates are melt -in-your-mouth delicious, I’m telling you! Anyways, because we came across these chocolates we decided to see how they would pair with wine. When doing a wine and chocolate tasting there are a few simple rules that you should stick to:
1. Your wine and chocolate should hover around the same sweetness. If one is much sweeter than the other then your wine will likely taste bitter.
2. The darker the chocolate, the darker the wine. Same to be said the other way: the lighter the chocolate the lighter the wine should be. If you decide to taste white chocolate than try and choose a sweet, white wine (like muscat or riesling).
3. Much like a regular wine tasting, taste in order from lighter to darker.
4. Lastly, take SMALL nibbles of the chocolate before sipping. Taking too large a bite can cause overwhelming flavors in your mouth once you sip your wine.
Our favorite was the “Firecracker” chocolate paired with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Dark chocolates (50-70%) like this one tend to pair best with big, bold reds. We, also, really loved the champagne with all the flavors (which is typical of this varietal)! Side note: I didn’t even get to try the baconluscious chocolate as my husband at it ALL before I got around to it. SOOOO, I can’t speak for how it tasted but he highly recommends it lol.
Yes, we had bacon, potato chip, and caramel apple infused chocolates with this tasting hahaha. I was very hesitant to try these at first but HOLY CRAP they were divine. If you ever see these at your local CVS, REI, or Target be sure to pick them up. You will thank me later :-D.
Anyways, if you ever go wine tasting look into wineries more in depth “experiences”. If you come across one that does a wine and chocolate pairing give it a try. Or better yet, host a wine and chocolate tasting for your next party!
I paired up with Chuao Chocolatier to give you all a 20% off promo code if you want to try any of their yummy chocolates: BRISGLASS
