When looking for a new winery to try I always look for a smaller, less well-known place. For some reason I tend to find the best wines at such places! Hidden gems, if you will. When I first began drinking wines I tended to stick to the larger, more commercialized wineries because, for one, they were easily accessible in my grocery stores. But, also, because they were the one’s written all over the web, hundreds of reviews on Yelp, and all over social media. However, in more recent years, I have found that I really, really enjoy finding wines from wineries that produce a far smaller case number, therefore, in my mind, are more exclusive. This search recently led me to Nimble Vineyards.
Located in Sonoma, CA Nimble Vineyards could not be any more gorgeous. With 47 planted acres, 6 varietals, a cabin, and an organic garden this place is my kind of heaven. But onto the good stuff…the wine!
I was lucky enough to try their Nobis (meaning “for us”) Syrah. Nimble Vineyards states that this is their reserve wine. The best of the best. These grapes are from the most sought after block on their property and produce flavors of cedar, red currant, and chocolate. Personally, I picked up all of these and more! I, also, picked up black cherry and some very earthy flavors. If ever given the chance, this wine is a MUST try at $40.00. I truly believe they could price this much higher if they wanted…it is that good.
Next, I tried their Nimble Pink. If I am being honest, what FIRST drew me to this winery was the color of this pink. I thought it was GORGEOUS and still do. When I got it in the mail I was gushing over the color to my husband and he thought I was nuts haha. Anyways, this Pink is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 4 months in neutral oak barrels and is stainless fermented. This wine has flavors of blueberry, violet, and cherry. Personally, I primarily picked up the blueberry (YUM!) and violet. This wine is HEAVEN and I RARELY say that about a pink/rose. At $18, this one is a steal! P.S. Only 51 cases of this Pink were made.
Finally, I tried their 2011 Nimble Hog named after the hogs often found roaming their vines. This red blend is a beautiful combination of 30% Syrah, 67% Zinfandel, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. With that much of their delicious Syrah grapes in it I knew this one was bound to be just as great as the others. I was sad to see that only 179 cases of this wine were made (wahhhhh!!) because that means it is bound to sell out quick :-(. I would LOVE to stock my wine fridge full of this red comprised of vanilla, black currant, and berry flavors.
Rarely do I say I found a new, favorite, hidden gem winery but this one is it!
