You all know my love for Napa Valley wines. It has my whole heart. BUT, the region of Paso Robles makes seriously good wines, at a fraction of the cost. Many like Paso Robles better because their wines rival Napa Valley wines, yet, don’t have Napa price tags. I have seen Daou Vineyards wines in countless grocery stores and restaurants but never tried their wines until recently. Holy crap… I’ve been missing out!
The lovely ladies over at OC Wine Mart invited me over for another tasting, this time being for 6 Daou wines. You cannot imagine my excitement for being invited to this event as I have seriously been wanting to try these wines for years. I cannot remember the last time I went to a tasting and said, “I think I would buy every single one of these wines!” (except maybe White Rock Vineyards). My husband and I truly LOVED every single one of the 6 Daou wines that we tried and I am not just saying that!
We began our tasting with the 2014 Chardonnay. Erik, my hubs, isn’t a fan of white wine. He prefers the BIG & BOLD wines, yet, even he loved this Chardonnay. Chardonnay’s sometimes all taste the same to me. It takes a really special one to stand out to me…this one was it! It had so many flavors that it was actually rather shocking. If you ever see it in store, definitely pick up a bottle.
Time for our favorite…the red wines! Paso Robles is known for producing some phenomenal red wine and Daou is a perfect example of what this region can do. We tried their 2012 Zin (a 92 pointer), their Pessimist Red Blend (a 91 pointer), their 2014 Cab Sauv (a 93 pointer), their Reserve Cab Sav (a 94 pointer), & their Seventeen Forty Reserve (a 93 pointer).
First off, can we talk about their accolades? I have never seen a wine list with such impressive scores. It was so hard for us both to deem our favorites but Erik landed with the Pessimist and Seventeen Forty Reserve. Whereas, I think my favorites were the regular and reserve Cab Sauv. With both I got intense flavors of blackberries, tobacco and cassis. PLEASE PLEASE try the regular cab sauv if you ever see it. At $24.99 it is beyond worth it.
Huge thank you to the OC Wine Mart with providing me with yet another tasting experience I will never forget. If ever in the OC area, check this place out. They have WINE FOUNTAINS where you can taste a HUGE variety of wines at tiny prices! It is my kinda heaven.
