The kind owners of The OC Wine Mart hosted my wine tasting partner (Hi, Mom!) and I for a Duckhorn & Decoy Wine Tasting. The OC Wine Mart had a Duckhorn & Decoy representative come out and lead us through a tasting of 7 of their wines…lucky us. As many times as I have been to Napa and seen these wines in the grocery store and countless restaurants I had never tried ANY of their wines, shame on me! So, naturally, I was thrilled to get to taste SEVEN of them in the coolest setting with a guided tasting tour from a pro. We tried: 2013 Duckhorn Sauvignon Blanc, 2014 Decoy Chardonnay, 2012 Duckhorn Merlot, 2013 Decoy Red Blend, 2013 Decoy Zinfandel, 2013 Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2013 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon.
When I go to a wine tasting I usually always leave with my FAVORITE being a red varietal. I LOVE some whites, but reds are my jam! However, this time I really think that my favorite was the 2014 Decoy Chardonnay.
I went into the tasting thinking that I would far and a way like the Duckhorn wines over the Decoy as the Duckhorn brand seems to be more “elite”, but I was wrong! This Chardonnay had the perfect balance of oak, butter, and sweetness. It was, also, very easy to pick up the fruits pear and apple. Have any of you ever tried this? If not, for $16.99 I HIGHLY recommend.
Going into the reds my mom had high hopes for the Decoy Red Blend as she tends to love red blend! She, nor I, were disappointed with this $19.99 wine. We both thought it was very well balanced and were able to pick up the flavor profile that they claimed. We got lots of cherry, spices, cocoa, and licorice Again, at this price point, we would highly recommend and it is sold in most grocery stores and at The OC Wine Mart wooohooo :-).
My favorite red was a toss up but I think It was the 2013 Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon (I left with a bottle!). This Napa Valley Cab was very well-balanced, with flavors of chocolate, vanilla, raspberry, and cinnamon. I love a BIG red wine and this one foot the bill. I will be opening the next time we grill up some steaks and potatoes :-). CHEERS!!!
If ever in the Southern CA area be sure to visit The OC Wine Mart. They have a HUGE selection of craft beers, wine by the bottle, or wine tastings. You can try a number of varietals from around the world for anywhere from $2-$5. After our Duckhorn & Decoy Wine Tasting my mom and I stayed and got to try some expensive wines that we had been wanting to try for years for only a couple of bucks a pour (and they aren’t wimpy pours). Such a cool concept!
