The other day I was at Trader Joes’s REALLY wanting a nutty, oaky Chardonnay! So I began reading through all their little description cards on the wine and was pretty bummed out when I didn’t see a one that claimed to be oaky. But low and behold I look down at the bottom shelf, where the really stellar cheap wine is at #blah, and I see the word OAKY. HOORAY!!!! I’m hesitant to try it as it’s only $5.99. Usually at that price point I feel like it’s not even worth the money as I will likely hate it.
Now, I am no wine snob but I feel like that saying “Life is too short to drink bad wine” comes in play here but I try it anyway. And I LOVED IT!!! I have never, ever, ever enjoyed a wine at this price point so much. I definitely plan to try more cheap wines because this one was a huge surprise and heaven knows I could use some cheaper wines around!
100% barrel fermented this wine goes through melalactic fermentation (its no surprise I loved it!) and had a great balance of sweetness and buttery, oak. Too be honest, I didn’t love it on the noise. It sort of just smelled like grape juice but I was pleasantly surprised with the layers of flavors I got on the palate. I tried it at almost room temperature to bring out the oak flavors more and got sugar and apples followed by a smooth buttery flavor.
Today I went to get another bottle to make sure I wasn’t crazy the first time I tried it. This time I get a lot more sweetness then I did the first time, which I typically do not like, but I would still highly recommend this for those that love buttery, oaky whites. Especially at this price!
I tried it without food the first time…highly recommend. Second time I (accidentally) tried it with goldfish…bad choice!
